We are proud to announce that Pontlab is the first laboratory in Italy to have obtained theaccreditation by Accredia to perform the following Stress Corrosion Cracking tests in sour environments (chlorinated solutions and H₂S mixtures H₂S ):
- Slow deformation test in aggressive environment /Slow Strain Rate Test (SSRT) in sour environment according to standard ASTM G 129 on metal matrices
- Slow deformation test in aggressive environment /Slow Strain Rate Test (SSRT) in sour environment according to standard NACE TM 0198 standard on stainless steels and nickel alloys.
. Stress Corrosion Cracking tests (.) are necessary to evaluate the performance of the materials used in extreme working conditions, such as prolonged exposure to particularly aggressive gases such as'H₂S (hydrogen sulfide), that is found especially in the extractive industry. These tests are indispensable to develop innovative solutions for products and components in all those sectors where the validation of materials is a fundamental part in the development and design process of expensive and delicate plants such as Oil.&Gas&Energy.
We asked our Head of the Metal Materials Area Eng. Arianna Scatena to tell us how the path to achieve this important result was :
“From half 2014 in Pontlab we have launched an area dedicated to stress corrosion tests, starting to perform various Stress Corrosoin Cracking in sour gas tests for an important customer in the Oil sector&gas. Subsequently, together with my team, we started studying the Slow Strain Rate In more detail, documenting ourselves on the various publications in literature. This activity over the years has led me to join the technical commission of NACE for the revision of the standard (TM 0198).
Later some customers asked us to carry out an audit to check our procedures in order to include us in their list of accredited laboratories. From there it seemed logical that the next step was to bring the test method into accreditation. Accreditation in fact determines greater control and level of attention on the entire test execution procedure, guaranteeing a higher quality of service and reliability of results for the customer.
The work, lasted about 1 year, it was complex, not so much for the operational procedure that by now we knew well, but to make the equipment verification system solid. The factors that in fact influence the result of a test are many (temperature, pressure, test solutions, gas composition, etc.) and managing them at the same time required commitment and a little bit’ of creativity .
The safety factor linked to the test must always be taken into consideration (you work with toxic gas mixtures) which must be extremely well looked after, as well as operating procedures.
The SSRT is a niche test not very well known on the market, but for us to be the first in Italy and among the very few in Europe to have it accredited, as well as being a source of pride, it is an important step towards becoming a reference laboratory for specialized companies operating in the oil sector&Gas.
Surely for next year we are already thinking of expanding the accreditations related to the Stress Corrosion laboratory, probably with autoclave exposure tests”.
